As Lady Macbeth, Lisa Algozzini charted the gradual degradation of a woman forced to reflect her husband’s ambitions back to him. Her “La luce langue” — haunted, fearful and quivering with uncertainty — became an elegy for people that she and Macbeth had not yet murdered, and “Una macchia” had a raw guilt to it...her performance was filled with gripping details.

The silent context provided psychological motivation for Lady M [Macbeth] (Lisa Algozzini) making her a more comprehensible and sympathetic character. Lady M’s high point was undoubtedly the banquet scene…as Lady M trilled a brindisi. Lady M attempted to draw attention away from her husband’s distress at the sight of the corpse: she downed another glass of champagne and gave an impression of wild intoxication, repeating the brindisi while dancing unsteadily on the table. Focused on Lady Macbeth, the sleepwalking scene became an anagnorisis––a tragic figure’s acknowledgment of error...but reframed Lady M’s madness as an awakening.

Algozzini...performs Musetta with great temperament. In this way, she kisses her elderly lover on the head while she winks over to Marcello, whom she still loves. As the soprano sings the first tender notes of the aria, 'Quando men vo,' it suddenly becomes quiet on the tower.
